Ever since the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, people have been jailbreaking the device to get custom looks, backgrounds, and a lot of other cool stuff for their phone’s. However, Apple actually looked at the most popular functions of a jailbreaked iPhone and they implemented that in their own iOS. Now the question is: Is it still worth to jailbreak your iPhone? When you jailbreak your Apple phone it will lose it’s warranty, so its certainly something you would want to consider before you go ahead.
When jailbreaking was first possible you couldn’t do a lot with a jailbreaked iPhone, because there weren’t any mods available at that time. After a few months the first modifications became available to the public. One of the most popular functions were a Background on your homescreen (used to black in the first versions of iOS), a Multitasking option, themes for your iPhone to change the look completely. Almost all of these functions were implemented in the standard version of their iOS, so if you were only looking for those functions you don’t need to make any changes to your phone at all.
So, what are the functions that make jailbreaking an iPhone worth it? Well, firstly there is an app you get on your phone which is called Cydia. With Cydia you can download all kinds of themes for your phone, modifications to the lock slider and complete overhauls of the iOS aren’t hard to find. The best thing is: Almost all of the mods are available for free. You can even change the look of your iPhone to a Android phone.
Another nice Advantage is that you will be able to download all of the Apps that can be found in the Apple Appstore for free. This advantage alone convince’s a lot of people to jailbreak their iPhone’s, but there is also a moral fact about this function. You do need to realize that the developers of those apps have probably spent thousands of hours developing those apps, so paying $89c for their work shouldn’t be such a loss as most people see it. If you were an App developer you wouldn’t like people who download your app for free neither.
Another feature that might convince you is the ability to change the app icons and keyboard looks. This is also a feature that a lot of people like. iPhone users often get bored with the standard grey keyboard, so they’ll download a more modern, fancy looking keyboard that does not bore you so fast. It is also possible to have a background picture’s carroussel that changes the background picture of your iPhone about every 15 seconds. You can add your own pictures or use the standart ones that come with it.
And last but not least, is the option to hook your iPhone up with a bluetooth keyboard for faster typing. This means that you can type whole essays, homework, and other large text’s directly on your phone. Super handy for people who are in college, or traveling a lot.
Although Apple has implemented a lot of features of a jailbreaked iPhone into their own iOS, there are still some reasons to jailbreak your iPhone. It is completely legal, but you will lose the warranty of the Apple product. If this is not a break point for you, then go ahead into modding your phone!
The Jailbreaking community is extremely fast in updating their software, and a jailbreak for the iPhone 5 with iOS 6 has already been released. This version is very stable, so even people with the latest phone from Apple have the ability to get all of these nice features for free.
